Thermal and Electrical Modalities
Thermal modalities include ultrasound, moist heat packs, ice, contrast baths and ice massage.
These modalities are used to assist in increasing blood flow, decreasing swelling and inflammation, increasing mobility and decreasing pain.
Electrical modalities include Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), therapeutic ultrasound, interferential current (IFC), and Neuromuscular Electrical Nerve Stimulation.
The effects of these modalities are extensive. They include decreasing swelling and inflammation, decreasing pain, increasing mobility, and improving muscle function.
